Where the Limitations Lie
As practical as composite is, the material has physical properties worth knowing about.
Polymerization shrinkage. As it hardens, the resin shrinks slightly toward its center. This can create fine gaps at the margin between the filling and the tooth. This effect occurs especially when the filling is not carefully modeled anatomically and cured in layers.
Secondary caries (recurrent decay). Bacteria collect especially easily at these very marginal gaps. They are a common starting point for new decay under or beside the existing filling.
Limited lifespan. Especially larger fillings can lose marginal seal after a few years. Wear and leakage then make replacement necessary.
Fracture risk with large defects. Large or non-anatomically shaped fillings can place unfavorable stress on the remaining tooth structure. In the worst case, this increases the risk of tooth walls collapsing or fracturing.
